Coley Stickels – Teaching Breaststroke and Butterfly
Coley Stickles, coach of Lake Oswego Swim Club, presented an analysis of short axis strokes, focusing on breaststroke and butterfly. He highlighted the energy expenditure in breaststroke, noting its start-and-stop motion leads to lactic acid buildup. Stickles discussed the evolution of breaststroke techniques, emphasizing the importance of a forward kick and the wave action of Barrowman. He also detailed various drills and techniques used by elite breaststrokers, such as Amanda Beard's over-the-top recovery and Sony's narrow kick. For butterfly, he analyzed the differences in hand entry and recovery styles, noting Michael Phelps' and Michael Cavic's techniques. Stickles also emphasized the importance of heel flexibility and maintaining stroke length in butterfly races.
