Kim Brackin – The Training of Kirsty Coventry
Kim Bracken, head coach at the University of Texas, discussed her coaching philosophy and the challenges faced by Kirsty Coventry, a swimmer she mentored to two Olympic gold medals. Bracken emphasized the importance of coaching the whole athlete, including mental preparation. She detailed Coventry's training regimen, including resistance swimming and IM workouts, and the impact of external pressures, such as suit controversies and personal issues. Despite setbacks, including a disappointing 100 backstroke performance, Coventry ultimately won gold in the 200 backstroke and set a world record. Bracken highlighted the need for athletes to manage stress and set realistic goals beyond just winning medals.
