Charlie Dragon – A Clockwork or an Orange? Balancing the Science and the Human in Coaching Athletes

Tom Sakovich, head coach at Bowell School, presented findings from a survey on junior nationals. The survey, based on 2013 data, included 70 coaches and 47 swimmers. Key insights: 50% of swimmers were with their coaches for 3+ years, and 20% for 5+ years. Most coaches trained swimmers for all distances, with 85% using IM-based training. 90% cycled through energy systems weekly. Average weekly yardage was 37-45k, with 80% emphasizing kicking. Dryland training focused on strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. Swimmers trained 8-9 practices/week, averaging 15-17 hours. The survey highlighted the importance of developing athletes holistically.
