2016 ASCA World Clinic Audio Talks, David Orr – How Do We Build Swimming In Anemic High School States?

Ira Klein and David Orr discussed the challenges of building high school swimming in Mississippi, a state with limited swimming infrastructure and participation. Orr highlighted the lack of college swim teams, with only Delta State University having a program, and the short seasons and minimal practices in MAIS schools. He noted that only 12 clubs exist in Mississippi compared to Iowa's 30. Orr suggested integrating swimming into PE, building more pools, and encouraging early participation to improve high school swimming. He also emphasized the importance of club coaches in high school programs and the need for better collaboration with other sports to enhance overall athletic development.
